Wise, Funny, Artful, Subversive!

WENDY COPE

Described as 'the most accomplished parodist since Max Beerbohm', Winchester's own Wendy Cope is well known for her hilarious send-ups of contemporary writers. When Poet Laureate was last up for grabs, and subsequently snaffled by Andrew Motion, Wendy's name rode high on the list of contenders for the position alongside Hegley, McGough and others; And you don't get on that bus unless you've got a ticket. Tonight's' reading comes from her latest collection Serious Concerns - parodies, literary jokes and love poems that are candid, sometimes erotic and very funny indeed.

National Poetry Day!

GARETH OWEN & PETER DIXON and GEOFF RIDDEN

Popular presenter of Radio 4's long-running Poetry Please! and Radio 5's Verse Universe, Gareth Owen is that unusual animal, a poet who is also an accomplished reader of not only his own but other writers' work. He's published four volumes of verse, five novels, has had four plays produced by the BBC and his work is included in numerous anthologies. Winchester's own Peter Dixon nearly lost us WWII as a child by shining his torch up at German bombers over London, he nearly knew the Beatles - in verse form of course - and nearly had a fight with another poet outside The Tower. Once. Ages ago. So no nambypamby, lisping, lute-plucking odemonger he, no sirree Bob. Pete is also an accomplished Spurs supporter, sometime dog-hater, scuba-diver, cartoonist, painter, closet Kylie fan and lover of pondlife - even dragonfly larvae. He's published poetry, written plays and studies in education. He's been on the telly and radio lots of times. He's also sworn that no short haired yellow-bellied son of tricky dicky's gonna mother hubbard soft soap him or Gareth Owen, or Geoff Ridden, so prepare for an evening of quality poetry and music; funny to serious, sad to celebratory. When po-faced Opinionator Mickie Most determined the Showbiz futures of performers on New Faces, singer/songwriter Geoff Ridden's career as a College Lecturer was confirmed. 'Keep the day job' muttered Mr Grumpy and the rest is history. Or English at KAC in Geoff's case. But he's since sworn that no short haired yellow-bellied son of tricky dicky's gonna mother hubbard soft soap him or Pete Dixon, or Gareth Owen, so prepare for an evening of quality poetry and music, funny to serious, sad to celebratory.
