National Poetry Day! GARETH OWEN & PETER DIXON and GEOFF RIDDEN Popular presenter of Radio 4's long-running Poetry Please! and Radio 5's Verse Universe, Gareth Owen is that unusual animal, a poet who is also an accomplished reader of not only his own but other writers' work. He's published four volumes of verse, five novels, has had four plays produced by the BBC and his work is included in numerous anthologies. Winchester's own Peter Dixon nearly lost us WWII as a child by shining his torch up at German bombers over London, he nearly knew the Beatles - in verse form of course - and nearly had a fight with another poet outside The Tower. Pete is also an accomplished Spurs supporter, sometime dog-hater, scuba-diver, cartoonist, painter, closet Kylie fan and lover of pondlife - even dragonfly larvae. He's published poetry, written plays and studies in education. He's been on the telly and radio lots of times. He's also sworn that no short haired yellow-bellied son of tricky dicky's gonna mother hubbard soft soap him or Gareth Owen, or Geoff Ridden, so prepare for an evening of quality poetry and music; funny to serious, sad to celebratory. When po-faced Opinionator Mickie Most determined the Showbiz futures of performers on New Faces, singer/songwriter Geoff Ridden's career as a College Lecturer was confirmed. THE JON STRONG BAND & JOHN COOPER CLARKE
Jon Strong toured as a solo performer in the late 80's with the likes of Robert Palmer, Ry Cooder, Van Morrison and Talk Talk. 1990 saw the birth of the Jon Strong Band and their album debuted to critical acclaim ('mind blowing acoustic guitar work driven by a solid classy rhythm section') The band are in constant demand, touring the UK and Europe, a brilliant live act, difficult to pigeon-hole but a joy to experience - there really isn't another band like them.
